If God Was an Editor

I’ve finished When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman and found this book extraordinary. Whilst the first third of the novel was really enjoyable, almost in parallel with the characters’ relocation to Cornwall and the demise of God, the rabbit, the book dies too.

The novel is a kaleidescope of too many disjointed experiences and characters, none of whom feel fully imagined. I didn’t engage with Elly, the main character at all, and I found the narrative jarring and disjointed. In the final third, I found myself skimming huge chunks of the book and got to the end with a sigh of relief.

For the want of an editor…
